Konrad III, König von Schönbrunn. Nicknamed “Der Vergoldete Adler” or “Der Prätor von Schönbrunn” by his contemporaries, Konrad III is the current and reigning king of Schönbrunn and a prince-elector of The Empire of Mankind. While it is generally considered both customary, if not traditional for both royal and aristocratic households to make their head, or otherwise eldest son and on rare occasions, firstborn daughter the heir to their realm or estate. The rightful head of House Mertz of Schönbrunn, Jon Mertz, had elected to disinherit his inheritance to The Kingdom of Schönbrunn in favour of his younger brother in order to pursue a doctorate in theology at The Imperial Academy at Nymphenberg in the Reichstadt, or the personal realm of The Emperors of Mankind within The Empire Proper. Amongst the ranks of both the great vassals to The Emperor of Mankind and The Prince-Electors of The Empire, The Mertz Kings of Schönbrunn have historically been both the wealthiest and most powerful princes in The Empire of Mankind after The Emperors themselves. The historical wealth and power of The Kingdom of Schönbrunn was largely due to being the site of the richest deposits of gold, silver, and gems within the boundaries of the civilized world as defined by the clergymen of the new gods. Though in recent decades, through the stewardship of both Konrad III and his predecessor, King Leopold IV of Schönbrunn, has the wealth and prosperity of “Der Königriech von Schönbrunn” been augmented by both the successful cultivation of wine and silk farming as well as the subsidization of the more urban, municipal industries rooted around the manufacturing of both consumer goods and military equiptment such as weapons, armour, and uniforms for the growing professional army of The Kingdom of Schönbrunn. Jon Mertz, as the official head of House Mertz and the older brother of Konrad III, has devoted his life’s work to lecturing on matters of theology at The University of Wörtzburch in The Kingdom of Solingen, or the realm of House Beggs in The Empire of Mankind, ancient enemies of House Mertz through a blood feud lasting several centuries. Due to the radical reforms being taught by Jon Mertz at The University of Wörtzburch, as well as Carter III of Solingen’s willingness to provide political asylum for both Jon Mertz and followers of his “reformation.” Konrad III has decided to remain faithful to both The Emperor of Mankind and The “Conservative” Church of The New Gods due to his family’s ancestral oaths of fealty to The Imperial Household for their royal title and station, despite, or rather because of his blood ties to the greatest religious reformer in The Civilized World. The gilding featured on this suit of armour is known “Orange Gold” or Gold smelted copper and nickel to create an imperishable “bronze” effect. The escutcheon I designed for Jon Mertz, a friend from Germany. The colour palette and overall design of this escutcheon is loosely inspired by both The Minotaurs and The Knights of The Raven Space Marine Chapters in Warhammer 40k. This escutcheon is for a low-fantasy setting of my design with technology equivalent to the late medieval and renaissance periods. Where formations of heavily mounted and armoured knight fight alongside armies of pikemen and matchlock musketeers, where medieval-style stone castles are gradually being zoned out in favour of both lavish country estates and devoted military fortifications due to the advancements made in artillery technology, and where my friends and familly fulfill the roles of members of royal and aristocratic households each with armies, lands, and fortunes at their disponsal. In context to the lore of my fantasy setting, House Mertz is the ruling family of The Kingdom of Schönbrunn in The Empire of Mankind and a vassal of House Steel, or The Imperial Household of The Empire of Mankind. Jon Mertz is the eldest son former heir of The Late Leopold IV of House Mertz, or the previous King of 

Schönbrunn, although he elected to opt out of the line of succession for the title of King of Schönbrunn in favour of his younger brother Konrad III, current head of House Mertz, Reigning King of Schönbrunn, and Prince-Elector of The Empire of Mankind, in order to pursue a Doctorate of Theology in The Imperial Academy in Nyphenburg, or the seat of The Imperial Household of The Emperor of Mankind. After a decade of salaried lecturing in The University of Wörtzburch in The Kingdom of Solingen, Jon Mertz wrote a discourse outlining what he regarded as the inherent corruption within the clergy of The Church of The New Gods as well as questioning the legitimacy of The Patriarch of Maccharia as the supreme authority on matters of religion in The Church of The New Gods as well as the legitimacy of The Emperor of Mankind as The Annointed and Crowned Suzerain of The Empire of Mankind. Although many within and without The Empire of Mankind showed great sympathy for the religious discourses of John Mertz as a learned doctor of the church, his hypotheses was met with strong opposition by the supporters of The High Patriarch and The Emperor of Mankind as well as their political supporters within The Empire, culminating in a period of religious warfare and sectarianism within The Empire of Mankind that spread quickly beyond it’s borders through missionaries and printers sympathetic with Jon Mertz’ reforms. Amongst the Aristocratic and Royal elites both within and without The Empire who have shown their political, military, and financial support to Jon Mertz, his followers, and his teachings include Carter II, Head of House Beggs and King of Solingen, where Jon Mertz began lecturing on matters of Theology, Zach I, Head of House Trewhitt and King of Middenland, James VI, Head of House Hobson and King of Albion, and Brian I “The Blessed,” Head of House Hobson and King of Sweetwater. Within the boundarines of The Empire of Mankind, Carter II as head of House Beggs, reigning King of Solingen, and A Prince-Elector of The Empire of Mankind has declared himself the lord-protector of John Mertz and his religious movement to reform The Church of The New Gods, granting political asylum for both Jon Mertz and his followers both within and beyond the boudarines of The Empire. With the greatest of duress, Konrad III as Head of House Mertz, King of Schönbrunn, and Prince-Elector of The Empire of Mankind has begrudgingly maintained his loyalty as a vassal to The Emperor of Mankind and kept faith with The Mother Church despite his blood ties to Jon Mertz, due in part to his ancestral oath of fealty with The Imperial Household for his royal title and station, as well as his family’s ancestral rivalry with House Beggs of Solingen going back several centuries. In terms of historical inspiration, The Kingdom of Schönbrunn is loosely inspired by the culture and aesthetic of Bavarian, or High German Culture during The Medieval and Early Modern Periods of European History, keeping in faith with The Northern, or “Austere” Imperial Culture obvious influence in medieval and Early Modern Germanic and Czech culture.

These illustrations are meant to replace some older illustrations of knights in either coats of chainmail or suits of late medieval plate armour to better suit the technological level of my fantasy setting. These illustrations are for a fantasy project of my design with technology equivalent to the late medieval and renaissance periods. Where formations of heavily armoured and mounted knights fight alongside armies of pikemen and matchlock musketeers, where medieval-style castles are quickly being zoned out in favour of lavish country estates due to the advancements made in artillery technology, and where my friends and family fulfill the roles of members of royal and aristocratic households each with armies, lands, and fortunes at their disposal. In context to the lore of my fantasy setting, House Maher is the ruling family of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, or my fantasy project’s rough equivalent to The Kingdom of France during the medieval and ancien regime periods of French and European history.

Kayven IV, 28th Margrave of Mazowsze. Nicknamed “The Raptor of Mazowsze” or “The Defender of The Faith” by his contemporaries both within and without The Margrave of Mazowsze. Kayven IV is both the current head of House Beemer and the 28th and reigning Margrave of Mazowsze. The head of an ancient royal house on the northernmost fringes of “The Civilized World” as defined by The Church of The New Gods in my fantasy setting, Kayven IV is regarded by many to be one of the shrewdest, if not most pragmatic statesmen of his age. In terms of his military reforms, Kayven Beemer’s application of both innovations in traditional infantry tactics like the pike square, as well as the novel technology of gunpowder in the form of the machlock firing mechanism and improvements in artillery design have come to define his armies as both the gold standard by which other kingdoms and empires model the quality and discipline of their infantry by, as well as the model army by which the application of the latest military tactics and technology is applied on the battlefield. Kayven Beemer has also strived to reform the cavalry arm of his armies by outsourcing traditional heavy cavalry in the form of knights armoured in suits of plate armour or coats of chainmail with the more lightly armoured, yet faster, more impetuous shock cavalry known as “Winged Hussars” to better help his growing professional army counter the antiquated, if not more lightly armed and armoured light cavalry armies indicative of The Caliphate of Khashabar’s military doctrine. He has also opened military service in both his cavalry formations and the rising officer corps of his growing professional army to the growing class of gentlemen, or land-owning commoners of non-noble birth. Both forms of military service have been, up to now, the exclusive privilege of the feudal, land-owning aristocracy, or those of noble birth. In terms of his civil, legislative, and fiscal policies, Kayven Beemer has done much to take legislative and executive power and autonomy out of the hands of feudal, aristocratic lords, and into the hands of a growing class of professional bureaucrats answerable only to the authority of the crown. Through a combination of armed force and diplomatic savvy, Kayven Beemer has managed to slowly replace the legislative and judicial autonomy of the myriad feudal law courts of the landed aristocracy by making huge swathes of his kingdom answerable to the jurisdiction of the new, “royal” law courts run by a growing corpus of professional bureaucrats and civil servants. As a fig leaf to the feudal privileges of the aristocracy, he has honoured many of the local customs within the administrative divisions of his royal law courts, as well as opening offices in his growing bureaucracy to the landed aristocracy, or those of noble birth, provided that they forfeit any noble titles and landed incomes in their possession while holding office granted by the crown. As part of his fiscal policies, Kayven IV has done much to promote commerce and industry within the Margraviate of Mazowsze by granting municipal authority to and subsidizing the commercial enterprises of the guilds, or trade unions of merchants, craftsmen, and professionals, by purchasing the metropolitan property of consecrated bishoprics and giving legal ownership of urban property to the guilds, in exchange for paying an annual income tax to the crown alongside any additional taxes raised for whatever project or interest the crown, or rather “royal authority” may have in mind. Kayven Beemer has also opened commissions for offices of municipal, or urban authority in the city councils of his growing civil bureaucracy to members the growing middle class of The Margraviate of Mazowse, regardless of whether they are rural gentlemen owning property in a metropolitan area, or the bourgeois merchants and professionals holding urban property and commercial assets as a member of a guild. The ownership of urban, or otherwise metropolitan lands and property, as well as representation and office in municipal councils, has been by tradition the exclusive right and privilege of the clergy of The Church of The New Gods, or the state religion of The Margraviate of Mazowsze. Where urban, or otherwise municipal authority was exclusively in the hands of priests, monks, and inquisitors ultimately answerable to the authority of a metropolitan bishop or abbot, who ruled the urban centres indirectly as part of a bisphoric or diocese; or the religious administrative divisions where the metropolitan cathedral or abbey held it’s religious services for the laity of the church, held legislative and judicial authority completely autonomous of royal, or otherwise secular jurisdiction, and produced “benifices” or clerical livelihoods made by renting land and property to the people living in both the urban and rural parts of the bisphoric or diocese. By granting lands, property, municipal offices to the growing middle class, did Kayven IV manage to establish secular, royal authority at the expense of the clergy of the new gods in the urban, municipal districts of his kingdom. To make amends with the clergy the new gods for limiting their fiscal, legislative, and executive powers and privileges in their own bisphorics and dioceses, Kayven IV agreed to legally enforce a mandatory church attendance policy for everyone living in the administrative district of a cathedral or abbey, thus securing the clergy’s income through “tithes” or payment by the laity for the religious services of the metropolitan clergy, as opposed to benefices raised by the church renting lands and property to people living on the administrative districts of their bisphoric or diocese, as well exempting members of the clergy of the new gods from both the annual income tax as well as any other taxes levied at royal decree, and giving the exclusive legal privilege to the investiture of new bishops and abbots to The Bishop of Olympia in The Empire of Mankind, known more commonly as “The Highfather.” Kayven Beemer’s policy of granting lands, property. municipal office to the growing middle class at the expense of the state clergy has not only increased his legislative and executive authority within the confines of his kingdom, but it has helped to secure him a steady source of income to fund both his growing professional army as well as the new civil bureaucracy working in his royal law courts and municipal councils, as well as provide more than adequate industries to equip and supply his armies with the latest weapons and technology. In addition to subsidizing the growing middle class at the expense of the nobility and clergy, Kayven Beemer’s fiscal policy also includes the revitalization of overseas trade. By using royal authority to create “charter companies,” or bodies of merchants and traders devoted to the acquisition of overseas profits in return for giving a share of their earnings to the crown, Kavyen IV has done much to stimulate overseas trade between The Margraviate of Mazowsze and foreign powers by delegating both legal proprietorship and political autonomy of trade fleets to his charter companies rather than maintaining them directly through the state bureaucracy itself. Although the charter companies could still petition for the crown’s financial support in return for both their politial autonomy from royal authority, as well as giving part of their profits as part of their charter with the crown. This illustration was made in part, as a gesture of goodwill towards my friend Kayven Beemer.

Dubbed “Kayven Beemer’s Finest Hour” in honour of The Margraviate of Mazowsze’s brilliant victory under the personal leadership of The Margrave himself against a massive incursion by the steppe nomads of Sibirsk and Yakutsk, both this escutcheon and this illustration were made for a fantasy project of my design that takes place in a low-fantasy setting with technology equivalent to the late medieval and renaissance periods. Where formations of heavily armoured and mounted knights fight alongside armies of pikemen and matchlock musketeers, and where my friends and family fulfill the roles of members of royal and aristocratic households each with great military, political, and financial assets at their disposal. Florian Vidonne, Count of Artois. Nicknamed “The Azure Angel” or “The First Amongst Equals” by his contemporaries. Florian Vidonne is both the current head of House Vidonne and the reigning count of Artois. Amongst the great lords of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, It is said that Florian Vidonne est the finest statesman among the vassals of House Maher of Aquitaine. It is also said that it is the tradition of The House of Vidonne to produce some of the best minds for politics and administration in The Kingdom of Aquitaine. During the majority of the history of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, it was always The Vidonnes of Artois who were the most important advisors among the council of The Kings of Aquitaine, and that this tradition is still alive under the reign of The Current Count of Artois. Outside his finesse with politics and administration, Florian Vidonne is also a highly accomplished warrior and general among the great lords of Aquitaine.  It is said that he has won fourteen of seventeen battles during his current military career. This illustration was made as a late birthday present for Florian Vidonne, a friend in France, that happened during April 29, 2019.

Greetings to all my fans and followers on Tumblr! For any and all of you who may have taken notice to the erasure of certain artworks within my current corpus opus, I have temporarily removed my artworks attached to The Margraviate of Mazowsze and it’s ruling house due to the inability to immediately find a suitable candidate to replace my friend who was the original holder of the title “Margrave of Mazowsze.” I have decided to keep the seat to this kingdom and all it’s associated artworks vacant until I have either found or made a friend who is as worthy as they are willing to inherit both this kingdom and all it’s associated works for the low-fantasy setting of my fantasy project. To any of my watchers and followers who may be interested in getting involved with my fantasy project through inheriting this kingdom and it’s associated works, feel free to shoot me a message or comment below and I’ll take your request into consideration in my decision to inaugurate the official replacement for my friend within my fantasy setting.

Nicolas Leforestier, Duke of Logresse. Now updated to include a change in the colour of the sword’s blade from scarlet to light grey. Nicknamed “The Sable Flower” by his contemporaries and “The Sword of Dawn” by Dauphin Charles, Nicolas Leforestier is both the current Duke of Logresse and the head of House Leforestier. Amongst the great lords of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, he is the most handsome and charming. It is said that the majority of girls in The Kingdom of Aquitaine, both noble girls and lowborn girls, have a crush on him and that his skill with poetry and lute won him the love of Princess Emily Maher Duchess of Bourbon, the youngest daughter of Dauphin Charles. Other than his charm and his wit, Nicolas Leforestier is a formidable warrior who is a champion of both joust and duel. Although he has won the tournament more than once, he still lacks real experience on the field of battle. This illustration was made as a late birthday present for Nicolas Leforestier, a friend in france, who turned 19 on October 12, 2017.
