Konrad III, König von Schönbrunn. Nicknamed “Der Vergoldete Adler” or “Der Prätor von Schönbrunn” by his contemporaries, Konrad III is the current and reigning king of Schönbrunn and a prince-elector of The Empire of Mankind. While it is generally considered both customary, if not traditional for both royal and aristocratic households to make their head, or otherwise eldest son and on rare occasions, firstborn daughter the heir to their realm or estate. The rightful head of House Mertz of Schönbrunn, Jon Mertz, had elected to disinherit his inheritance to The Kingdom of Schönbrunn in favour of his younger brother in order to pursue a doctorate in theology at The Imperial Academy at Nymphenberg in the Reichstadt, or the personal realm of The Emperors of Mankind within The Empire Proper. Amongst the ranks of both the great vassals to The Emperor of Mankind and The Prince-Electors of The Empire, The Mertz Kings of Schönbrunn have historically been both the wealthiest and most powerful princes in The Empire of Mankind after The Emperors themselves. The historical wealth and power of The Kingdom of Schönbrunn was largely due to being the site of the richest deposits of gold, silver, and gems within the boundaries of the civilized world as defined by the clergymen of the new gods. Though in recent decades, through the stewardship of both Konrad III and his predecessor, King Leopold IV of Schönbrunn, has the wealth and prosperity of “Der Königriech von Schönbrunn” been augmented by both the successful cultivation of wine and silk farming as well as the subsidization of the more urban, municipal industries rooted around the manufacturing of both consumer goods and military equiptment such as weapons, armour, and uniforms for the growing professional army of The Kingdom of Schönbrunn. Jon Mertz, as the official head of House Mertz and the older brother of Konrad III, has devoted his life’s work to lecturing on matters of theology at The University of Wörtzburch in The Kingdom of Solingen, or the realm of House Beggs in The Empire of Mankind, ancient enemies of House Mertz through a blood feud lasting several centuries. Due to the radical reforms being taught by Jon Mertz at The University of Wörtzburch, as well as Carter III of Solingen’s willingness to provide political asylum for both Jon Mertz and followers of his “reformation.” Konrad III has decided to remain faithful to both The Emperor of Mankind and The “Conservative” Church of The New Gods due to his family’s ancestral oaths of fealty to The Imperial Household for their royal title and station, despite, or rather because of his blood ties to the greatest religious reformer in The Civilized World. The gilding featured on this suit of armour is known “Orange Gold” or Gold smelted copper and nickel to create an imperishable “bronze” effect. This illustration was designed as a gift for Jon Mertz, a friend from Germany.
Some illustrations of knights in 16th century “Gothic” and “Milanese” suits of plate armour I retouched to feature the colours and coat of arms I designed for my family and I. These illustrations are meant to replace some older illustrations of knights in either coats of chainmail or suits of late medieval plate armour to better suit the technological level of my fantasy setting. These illustrations are for a fantasy project of my design with technology equivalent to the late medieval and renaissance periods. Where formations of heavily armoured and mounted knights fight alongside armies of pikemen and matchlock musketeers, where medieval-style castles are quickly being zoned out in favour of lavish country estates due to the advancements made in artillery technology, and where my friends and family fulfill the roles of members of royal and aristocratic households each with armies, lands, and fortunes at their disposal. In context to the lore of my fantasy setting, House Maher is the ruling family of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, or my fantasy project’s rough equivalent to The Kingdom of France during the medieval and ancien regime periods of French and European history.
Florian Vidonne, Count of Artois. Nicknamed “The Azure Angel” or “The First Amongst Equals” by his contemporaries. Florian Vidonne is both the current head of House Vidonne and the reigning count of Artois. Amongst the great lords of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, It is said that Florian Vidonne est the finest statesman among the vassals of House Maher of Aquitaine. It is also said that it is the tradition of The House of Vidonne to produce some of the best minds for politics and administration in The Kingdom of Aquitaine. During the majority of the history of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, it was always The Vidonnes of Artois who were the most important advisors among the council of The Kings of Aquitaine, and that this tradition is still alive under the reign of The Current Count of Artois. Outside his finesse with politics and administration, Florian Vidonne is also a highly accomplished warrior and general among the great lords of Aquitaine. It is said that he has won fourteen of seventeen battles during his current military career. This illustration was made as a late birthday present for Florian Vidonne, a friend in France, that happened during April 29, 2019.
Nicolas Leforestier, Duke of Logresse. Now updated to include a change in the colour of the sword’s blade from scarlet to light grey. Nicknamed “The Sable Flower” by his contemporaries and “The Sword of Dawn” by Dauphin Charles, Nicolas Leforestier is both the current Duke of Logresse and the head of House Leforestier. Amongst the great lords of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, he is the most handsome and charming. It is said that the majority of girls in The Kingdom of Aquitaine, both noble girls and lowborn girls, have a crush on him and that his skill with poetry and lute won him the love of Princess Emily Maher Duchess of Bourbon, the youngest daughter of Dauphin Charles. Other than his charm and his wit, Nicolas Leforestier is a formidable warrior who is a champion of both joust and duel. Although he has won the tournament more than once, he still lacks real experience on the field of battle. This illustration was made as a late birthday present for Nicolas Leforestier, a friend in france, who turned 19 on October 12, 2017.
Romain Kilbertus, Count of Touraine. Nicknamed “The Hammer of Touraine” or “The Prince of Armourers” by his contemporaries, Romain Kilbertus is both the current head of House Kilbertus and the reigning Count of Touraine. A vassal of House Maher of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, it said that it is the tradition of his family and he to produce some of the best armourers amongst the great lords of The Kingdom of Aquitaine. There is also a friendly competition between him and Alexandre Lechuga, Duke of Bordelaux to produce the best firelocks and armours as a past time. It is also said that it is the historic tradition of The County of Touraine under The House of Kilbertus to have the most prosperous industry in The Kingdom of Aquitaine for producing weapons and armour for both The Royal Army of Aquitaine and The Army of House Kilbertus. Amongst the armies of the great lords of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, it is that of House Kilbertus who are equipped with the finest artillery pieces and armour of any army in Aquitaine, even the artillery and the armour of The Royal Army of House Maher of Aquitaine comes in second to those of the army of House Kilbertus. This illustration was made as a late birthday present for Romain Kilbertus, a friend in France, that happened on the 29th of March.
Theo Dufour, Duke of Lyonesse. Nicknamed “The Lionhearted” or “The Azure Lion” by his contemporaries, Theo Dufour is both the current head of House Dufour and the reigning Duke of Lyonesse. One of the great lords of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, Theo Dufour is the most seasoned general amongst the current vassals of The Kings of Aquitaine. It is said that he has won seventeen of twenty-one battles during his military career, despite his relatively young age. It is said that the only general to have won more battles than he is Prince Tim Maher, Duc de Chambord, who has won twenty-four of thirty-one of his battles. It is also said that amongst the current great lords of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, he has beheaded the most generals in single combat, including the older brother of Nikolas VI, The Reigning Emperor of Mankind. This illustration was made as a gesture of goodwill for Theo Dufour, a friend in France, during a personal crisis in his life.
Zach I, König von Middenland. Nicknamed “Der Eroberer von Middenland” or “Der Alte Kriegsvogel” by his contemporaries. Zach I is both the head of House Trewhitt and the first and current member of House Trewhitt to rule as King of Middenland. A native to the “Austere” or “Northern” culture of The Empire of Mankind, Zach Trew had acquired the throne of The Former Kingdom of The Midlands through the military conquest and political subjugation of lands that had once belonged to House Bartol before the extinction of their line over a century ago. After Zach Trew’s conquest and coronation as The New “König von Middenland,” his initial and longest standing policy as king was to encourage the migration and colonization of settlers from The Northern Empire of Mankind as well as the ethnic and cultural assimilation of Middenland’s native inhabitants through encouraging intermarriage with the northern imperial settlers as well as encouraging the spread of the northern imperial language and culture in Middenland through the church schools and the religious services of an ethnic northern imperial clergy. Zach Trew is almost universally regarded across the civilized world, or the world under the sway and influence of the religious denominations of the many gods, as the preeminent military and political genius of his age, thanks in courtesy to his subsequent conquest, consolidation, and economic expansion over the formerly neglected lands of The New “Königreich von Middenland” throughout his long and extensive reign as king. Zach I is also the maternal grandfather of James VI, King of Albion and Princess Kaitlin Hobson, Duchess of Kingswood through the political marriage of his daughter Chloe Trew to the late Robert III of Albion. This illustration was designed as a gift for Zach Trew, a friend in Missouri.
An illustration of a fantasy knight I retouched to feature the colours and coat of arms I designed Zach Trew, a friend in Missouri. Artwork for a creative project of my design that takes place in a low fantasy setting with technology equivalent to the late medieval and renaissance periods. Where formations of heavily armoured and mounted knights fight alongside armies of pikemen and matchlock musketeers, and where my friends and family fulfill the roles of members of royal and aristocratic households each with armies, lands, and fortunes at their disposal. In context to the lore of my creative project, House Trewhitt is the ruling family of The Kingdom of Middenland, or the former Kingdom of The Midlands under House Bartol. While bearing no exact equivalent in medieval or early modern European history, the culture, language, and traditions of The Kingdom of Middenland resembles Germanic and Czech culture during the medieval and early modern periods of European history. This is largely due to the immigration of colonists from the dominant, northern culture of The Empire of Mankind, or the “Austere” Imperials as well as the cultural assimilation of the native, Albic descent population of the former Kingdom of The Midlands. Both the colonization and cultural assimilation of the former Kingdom of The Midlands are the result of Zach Trew’s conquest and subsequent coronation as the new “König von Middenland,” a title that has remained vacant since the extinction of House Bartol over a century ago. Designated as a “Rieter” in the lore of my creative project, the Rieter of House Trewhitt and The Kingdom of Middenland differ from the conventional knights of other kingdoms and empires in the sense that their martial culture and traditions diverge heavily from the traditional codes of chivalry popular in The Kingdom of Aquitaine and The Empire of Mankind, as well as having a distinct military organization and structure formulated and implemented by Zach Trew Himself during his conquest of The Midlands.
An illustration of a knight of House Maher of Aquitaine being knocked off his horse by a boyar cavalryman of House Gronsky of Rus’skaya. Now updated to include improved gold rendering on the knight’s gilded armour. Made to commemorate the crushing victory of House Gronsky over the Mahers in the last Aquitainian invasion of Rus’skaya, and as a nod by House Maher to the skill and prowess of the aristocratic cavalrymen of Rus’skaya, considered by the knights of Aquitaine to be one of their few equals in both joust and duel. This piece has been dubbed “The Hubris of the Mahers” to reflect the clash between the courtly, elegant, and refined culture of The Kingdom of Aquitaine with the hardy, resilient, and rugged culture of The Tsardom of Rus’skaya.
Edmund Olivier, Duke of Dulac. Nicknamed “La Fleur de Chevalerie” or “La Lame Impeccable” by his contemporaries, Edmund Olivier is both the head of House Olivier and the current Duke of Dulac. A vassal of House Maher of The Kingdom of Aquitaine, Edmund is one of the current great lords of The Kingdom of Aquitaine. Although Edmund Olivier is by no means the first of his line to be considered as such, Edmund Olivier is regarded by many both within and without The Kingdom of Aquitaine as one of the greatest paragons of chivalry alive. Even his enemies regard him to be an ideal of knightly virtue and a model of manly courage in the face of certain death. His sense of bravoure and boyish charm has won him the adoration of both noble and lowborn girls both throughout and beyond Aquitaine’s borders. Even the stern and stoic clergymen of the church of the new gods remark him to be an almost saintly ideal of a soldier of the faith. Apart from his great personal reputation for chivalry, his seemingly unblemished charisma, and his beauteous soul. It has been universally regarded to be the tradition of House Olivier of Dulac to field the largest and most disciplined corps of knights of all the great houses of Aquitainian Nobility, more often than not surpassing the quality and skill of the knights in service to The Royal Army of House Maher of Aquitaine. The Duchy of Dulac itself is considered to be the finest wine country in the entirety of The Kingdom of Aquitaine as well as a centre of culture through it’s proliferation of the arts, music, and literature, with both it’s wines and the patronage of it’s artists, musicians, and poets fetching a high price in both local and foreign markets. This industry rooted in wine making and the arts is as much a product of the duchy’s natural circumstances as it has been the policy of historic Dukes of Dulac under The House of Olivier. This illustration was made as a belated birthday present for my friend Edmund Olivier, who turned 22 years of age of December 17, 2018.
